Cholesterol is a fat-like substance found within all cells of the body that is used for the production of hormones, digestive substances and vitamin D. Cholesterol travels through the bloodstream in small packages called lipoproteins. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is considered the “good” cholesterol for its protective qualities against heart disease. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the “bad” cholesterol that increases the risk for heart disease. High levels of triglycerides, which are the main component of body fat, are also linked to the risk for heart disease and stroke. Studies have identified a number of genes associated with the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
